Coronavirus : The Disease 😷
Definition
Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, the viruses cause respiratory infections which are typically mild including the common cold but rarer forms like SARS and MERS can be lethal. In cows and pigs they may cause diarrhea, while in chickens they can cause an upper respiratory disease. But, still there is no vaccine or treatment developed for the treatment of coronavirus.
History
The name "coronavirus" is derived from the Latin corona, meaning crown or halo. Coronaviruses were discovered in the 1960s; the earliest ones discovered were infectious bronchitis virus in chickens and two viruses from the nasal cavities of human patients with the common cold that were subsequently named human coronavirus 229E and human coronavirus OC43.
Current status
That was the History and definition of the coronavirus but lets now talk about the 2020 Coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan ( China ) -
A new coronavirus, designated 2019-nCoV, was identified in late 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, after people developed pneumonia without a clear cause and for which existing vaccines or treatments were not effective. The spread of coronavirus which started from China has now managed to get it's roots in 25 different countries. As of 31 January 2020, more than 9000 cases of the virus have been confirmed which is increasing rapidly.
A number of countries have put out warning against travel to Wuhan and Hubei province. Travellers who have visited Mainland China have been asked to monitor their health for at least two weeks and contact their healthcare provider to report any symptoms of the virus. All over the world many countries are trying their best to bring back their citizens safely and securely.
On 30 January, the outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO), the sixth time that the measure has been invoked since the H1N1 pandemic in 2009.
Symptoms
Symptoms of this virus may be just a simple cold, fever and breathing problem. Cases of severe infection can result in pneumonia, kidney failure, and ultimately death. Among the first 41 confirmed cases admitted to hospitals in Wuhan, 13 (32%) individuals had another chronic condition, like diabetes or hypertension.
Management
There is no specific medication or vaccine for 2019-nCoV, though development efforts are underway. While a group of Australian scientists claim that are on their way to develop the vaccine.
Prevention
To prevent infection, the WHO recommends "regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing…
